The Kano State Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Yusuf Kofar Mata, faced intense questioning from the state’s anti-corruption and Public Complaints Commission regarding an alleged N1.5 billion foreign scholarship fraud.
The commissioner spent nearly five hours, from 3:45 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, responding to investigators’ queries.
The commission is investigating the sponsorship of 1,001 postgraduate students to pursue master’s degrees in India, Kenya, and Uganda under the government’s foreign scholarship scheme, Launched by Governor Abba Yusuf, this initiative aims to support students’ education abroad.
A credible source within the commission revealed that Dr. Kofar Mata is cooperating with investigators.
Although he was not detained, the commissioner is expected to return to the commission this week with additional documents to aid the investigation.
The commission’s investigation seeks to ensure transparency and accountability in the program’s implementation.
The outcome of this investigation will be crucial in determining the fate of the foreign scholarship scheme and the commissioner’s involvement in the alleged fraud.
